“Shoemaker’s son” sounds impressive. People imagine new shoes every season—custom models, exclusive prototypes, VIP treatment.

Reality? A daily shoelace negotiation. Tie. Adjust. Re-tie. One side longer, the other side shorter.

“We can send rockets into space… but I’m still fighting shoelaces every morning?”

“Dad, I want slip-ons.”

I told my dad I was done tying laces. I wanted something simple. Something faster.

He didn’t argue. He didn’t lecture. He just picked up my shoes and walked to the bench.

The unexpected return

A few minutes later he came back… with the exact same pair.

Me: “So… where’s the new model?”
Him: “Tie it once.”

The upgrade

He replaced my standard laces with elastic laces. The next morning I slid my shoes on without re-tying anything.
